JAKARTA - Indonesia should be more aggressive as the chairman of ASEAN, especially in making the regional organization play a role in the global arena, a legislator said.
"As I see it, this is a golden opportunity for Indonesia as the ASEAN chairman to build a positive image and global 'positioning'," said. Fayakhun Andriadi, a member of the House of Representatives Commission I on foreign affairs, here Monday.
He was speaking to welcome the ASEAN summit which will be held in Jakarta on May 4-8, 2011, and provide concrete feedback on how Indonesia should conduct itself as the ASEAN chair.
Fayakhun also said there was still plenty of "homework" for ASEAN to finish and waiting to be solved such as the Thai-Cambodian border dispute, democratization in Myanmar, especially CAFTA's implementation which had caused much controversy, including in Indonesia," he said.
But Fayakhun was also optimistic that ASEAN had the potential to become a world-class producer and consumer, with the effect of high economic dynamism.
"ASEAN's strategic position, abundant natural resources, incredible human resources, the tropical climate and many other competitive advantages is ideal to create ASEAN and Indonesia in particular could be more up to the role and 'positioning' on the global stage," he said.
He also said that the ASEAN geopolitical position with Indonesia in particular is very strategic and its empowerment it can be maximally developed to be more aggressive.
