| N Sumatra to have new seaport |

WASPADA ONLINE MEDAN, N SUMATRA - North Sumatra is soon to have new seaport called Kuala Tanjung situated at Batubara regency. It will be utilized along with Belawan, at Medan, following positive supports voiced by province's Legislative Council. "The new coming modern port is needed to answer agreement with number of industries in North Sumatra," said the lawmaker Tunggul Siagian here. In his opinion, Kuala Tanjung is expected to compete with Singapore's seaports, such as the Port Klang. "Kuala Tanjung is potential enhancing local economy," he concluded. In the meantime, State port operator PT Pelabuhan Indonesia (Pelindo) I Director Hari Sutanto told reporters that Kuala Tanjung construction may spend Rp1 trillion of budget. "So far, we're looking forward government's approval to establish the International class seaport in Batubara," he added. "If they say yes, Kuala Tanjung could be developed this year." Kuala Tanjung is planned for transportation requirement in the Western part from Aceh to Riau provinces. (dat04/antara) |
