JAKARTA - Foreign Affairs Minister Marty Natalegawa said the proposed ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) needed to be synergized with two other pillars, namely those in the political and socio-cultural fields.

"We think there is a need for synergy between the three pillars, so that it will not only be about economics but also politics and socio-cultural matters ," the minister said after attending a coordination meeting on preparations for the AEC's establishment at the office of the Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs here on Friday (Aug.13).

He said he was raising the idea of synergizing the three pillars as Indonesia's input  with regard to the establishment of AEC.

Noting  that Indonesia would assume the ASEAN chair next year (2011), he said  there was  need to make sure that various commitments and responsibilities were substantiated.

"We must ascertain  that there has indeed been  progress and things are already on the right track. So this morning we discussed our preparations for  AEC's declaration," he said.

Meanwhile, on a proporsal to set up  Indonesian tax offices in foreign countries, the minister said his ministry was always upholding the principles of  efficiency and usefulness.

"Where the placement of technical officials at all of our overeas missions is concerned,  we always emphasize  the principles of efficiency and usefulness. What purpose does it serve, will it be efficient because the placement of any  official overseas entails expenditures that are not small," he said.
